Children & Young People
Luke 1 v 17: “And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children…”
There is a need to engage whole generations not just children on their own. How do we speak to whole families and connect church, school and home?
There is real interest in offering something different for your young people but the starting point is building relationships. Developing ideas with a young person can simply be the case of involving another responsible adult who can relate to those ideas and help with that development.
Anything that is created for young people needs to be safe, feel welcome, may be a refuge, and good for the parents/carers to be a part of too in terms of intergenerational mission. Identifying approachable Jesus-like leaders among the adults in our churches who children and young people can meet with & ask questions. Safely linking a young person who has a particular interest with an adult who has a similar interest and could share their knowledge and passion.
There is recognition of a commitment to passing on the Christian faith. Families following the Muslim faith take this seriously as every Saturday parents/carers bring their children to local mosque. How can we maintain and grow that commitment in our churches?
There is a recognition of the need to be visible from the outside and engaging with children and young people in our communities. Using what we’ve got such as our connections in schools and build upon those connections.
It is also recognised that paid family/children’s workers are a fantastic resource which requires financial investment. How do we dream big and include in our plans a detached worker or youth worker and the right meeting space?
